This course explores the evolution of systematic politics in the U.S., from pre-Civil War abolitionism and post-war social science convergence to the early 20th-century Progressive movement’s alignment with social science. It examines how the Progressive agenda, presented as non-partisan and scientific, drove significant structural changes in the U.S. government.
